Nike Journal – Harlem Honeys & Bears

This isn't your grandma's water aerobics class, unless your grandma is completely badass. Founded in 1979, The Harlem Honeys and Bears is a synchronized swim team consisting of local senior citizens with a roster that includes teammates well into their nineties. Gathering at the Hansborough Recreation Center on 134th Street, the team provides an opportunity for folks to tackle a sport they perhaps never thought possible—all the while helping to dispel the persistent myth that Black people don’t belong in the water.
